Eldersburg Branch Library
1:00 PM - Add to Outlook calendar  |  Add to Google calendar
For ages 11 - Adults
We do not know what Martin Luther King, Jr. would have preached on Palm or Easter Sunday, 1968, because on April 4th he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. What we do know is that as his body was interred, America exploded in the greatest spate of domestic violence since the Civil War. Peter Levy examines uprisings that took place across the United States, with a special focus on the one that took place in Baltimore, Maryland, which played a crucial role in the rise of Spiro Agnew as a national symbol of the New Right. Peter Levy is Professor of History at York College, Pennsylvania. He has numerous publications on the Civil Rights movement. He holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. This program is part of the Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle grant, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. A Celebrating America program.

It was a shocking reality that often went unacknowledged, a system of forced, unpaid labor, mostly affecting Southern black men, which lasted until World War II. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by Douglas Blackmon, Slavery by Another Name tells the stories of men, charged with crimes like vagrancy, and often guilty of nothing, who were bought and sold, abused, and subjected to sometimes deadly working conditions as unpaid convict labor. Run time of 90 minutes. This film is part of the Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle film series, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. For ages 11 - Adults
The symbiosis of social forces and art during the Civil Rights movement is evident in the poetry produced from 1955 through 1975. Jeffrey Lamar Coleman explores the impact of the social movement's upheaval on American writers and illuminates their artistic and political contributions to the struggle. The presentation pays special attention to poems written in response to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as other key moments of the movement. The poems are placed in historical context through brief discussions of the murders of Emmett Till and Medgar Evers, the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, and the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Malcolm X. Jeffrey Lamar Coleman is the author of Words of Protest, Words of Freedom: Poetry of the American Civil Rights Movement and Era, and Spirits Distilled: Poems. He is an Associate Professor of English at St. Mary's College of Maryland, specializing in multicultural/American literature. Dr. Coleman will be selling and signing his book, Words of Protest, Words of Freedom. This program is part of the Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle grant, sponsored by the national Endowment for the Humanities and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. A Celebrating America program.

It involved a serendipitous sequence of events including a road trip to New Mexico, Native American pottery thieves, and champagne. (Yes, truth IS stranger than fiction.)
