For ages 11 - Adults
We do not know what Martin Luther King, Jr. would have preached on Palm or Easter Sunday, 1968, because on April 4th he was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. What we do know is that as his body was interred, America exploded in the greatest spate of domestic violence since the Civil War. Peter Levy examines uprisings that took place across the United States, with a special focus on the one that took place in Baltimore, Maryland, which played a crucial role in the rise of Spiro Agnew as a national symbol of the New Right. Peter Levy is Professor of History at York College, Pennsylvania. He has numerous publications on the Civil Rights movement. He holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. This program is part of the Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle grant, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. It was a shocking reality that often went unacknowledged, a system of forced, unpaid labor, mostly affecting Southern black men, which lasted until World War II. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book by Douglas Blackmon, Slavery by Another Name tells the stories of men, charged with crimes like vagrancy, and often guilty of nothing, who were bought and sold, abused, and subjected to sometimes deadly working conditions as unpaid convict labor. Run time of 90 minutes. This film is part of the Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle film series, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Babies and small children are natural yogis and yoginis. With children as young as four weeks old, caregivers can work with their little ones to practice developmentally appropriate yoga poses. Don't worry if your little one is always on the go, the instructor works with the energy of the children and tailors the class accordingly. Moves stimulate the brain, encourage proper alignment, help with digestion and sleep patterns, teach calming breath work, encourage early critical thinking skills and foster the love of physical fitness at a young age. All children should attend with an adult caregiver and dress ready to stretch and move. Only kids need to register.
